Ski Review

What Peak says: “Only want to own one pair of skis? You should reconsider that. But if forced, reach for the Peak 98. It leaves trenches on hardpack and blows up powder.

If you ask us, the Peak 98 is the ski that 80 percent of skiers should be piloting 80 percent of the time. It’s that versatile. Looking at nothing but groomers today? You can cruise at family speeds or blast super-G turns. Off-trail in powder, crud, chalk, or corn, it’s nimble and floaty enough for all but the deepest of resort days. The 98 defines the all-mountain category.

Like the sounds of the Peak 98 but looking for something lighter weight and suited for inbound hikes? Pop on over to our Peak 98 by Dav skis. The slightly softer flex and weight savings make it a top pick for the backcountry crowd and women skiers too."

Review: First impression of the Peak 98? Powerful and playful. When we got our hands on the Peak 98 a few things stood out immediately. Peak by Bode Miller is known for features that other skis are without. The biggest is the KeyHole Technology. A staple from Miller's days on the World Cup, when a ski builder would cut through the metal laminate on GS skis. Creating a more forgiving entry in turns that won't compromise edge control.

Peak 98 rewards aggressive skiing (not much of a surprise, considering who the creator is) yet allows you to get in the back seat without biting back. Overall there is a lot to like about the Peak 98 and this ski will appeal to various skiers. The multitude of conditions that the Peak 98 handles well is impressive. While Peak likes to say its the perfect, "one ski quiver" (we wouldn't recommend such a thing) it fits the bill for a lot of different riders. While not the most "chargey" ski, it still allows you to press play.

In everyday ski terms, how does the Peak 98 ski/compare to the other Goliath all mountain skis on the market?

Carving: The KeyHole Technology is what most skiers notice right away. As we mentioned above this allows the ski to create a more forgiving turn-entry. Yet the Peak 98 catches on edge the moment you begin to press the shovel of the ski. Peak claims the skis were made for on packed snow 50% of the time 50% off-piste. What do we think about that claim? Accurate, the Peak 98 is a true daily driver for those who want a ski that does a little bit of everything well.

For those of you who are searching for a ski that responds well and will hold an edge the Peak 98 does just that.

Bumps: In the moguls, the Peak 98 reacts and skis quite well especially when you consider the 98 waist. When you're in spring bumps that are up to your shoulder the Peak 98 will whip around without question. The quick grab on the edge helps maintain control while the KeyHole technology allows you to whip them around without question.

All Mountain / Big Mountain: While the Peak 98 impressed us while on piste, the moment we took them to some big mountain terrain, this is where we thought the Peak 98 shined. While there are dozens of all-mountain/ big mountain skis on the market the Peak 98 rides differently than the rest.

Above we mentioned powerful yet playful as our first description. The Peak 98 allows you to "charge" without having to be as "chargey" as say the K2 Mindbender 99 Ti. Having some play in the ski allows you to combine two important factors when riding big mountain terrian. With two layers of metal between a paulownia and ash core and a vertical cut in the upper metal creating smooth turn initiation.

Overall Takeaways: A great all-mountain ski for advanced intermediates to experts looking for a ski that offers a directional ride that allows you to be playful without having to be "on" 100% of the time. Light but not too light but durable. A great daily driver that most skiers will find something that they enjoy.
