Night skiing is a unique experience that is hard to come by. Either you are earning your turns in the backcountry or you are lucky enough to have a ski resort offer you after-work laps. While skiing and riding doesn't change the mountain can transform. Be sure you are ready to night ski with the She-Shredz guide below.
1. LAYER UP
This may seem like a no brainer but mountains at night during winter, become much colder. Bring out the insulated pants and jackets and layer up. Base layer, mid layer, and insulated jacket. Add extra warm gloves/mittens, and neck gaiters to ensure you are extra warm and toasty.
2. LOW LIGHT LENSES
Just because the sun is down don't think you don't need goggles. Make sure to bring out that low light/ clear lenses to see where you are going. While it may be dark out, it can still be windy. Protect your eyes and your body by making sure you can see.
3. PREPARE FOR FIRMER CONDITIONS
While we have personally be treated to after work powder laps (thank you Boreal) most nights as the night progresses the snow tends to firm up and become icier. Sticking to groomers and the park is a good way to ensure best conditions. Consider while picking your ski/board when you leave for the mountain.
4. CHEAPER LIFT TICKETS
One big bonus to night skiing? Cheaper lift tickets. You can pick up a seriously discounted price at most resorts saving quite a bit of coin. After work laps and saving money? Sign us up.
5. BRING A HEADLAMP
This is a pro tip we picked up last season during some knee deep powder night skiing. Bring a headlamp if you plan on getting a little bit silly. While the resort will have adequate lighting there may be those special occasions where side quest are on the menu. Make sure you have good lighting to avoid injury.
